Hosting Features
(Definitions)
Below you will find
a brief description of each feature available
in the Hosting
Packages.
- Virtual Web Site -- A virtual web site is a web site that
is physically located on the same web server
machine as other
web sites. With this standard mechanism ISP's
can host many web sites on the same machine
allowing for significant cost reduction to
the web site owner.
- Domain Name -- A domain name is a set of characters
that is a easily remembered by people that
allows users to easily navigate to a particular web
site address. Every web site on the Internet
is actually located at an IP address that is
usually pointed to by an easy to remember domain
name. An IP address is a series of numbers
just like on a house street address. For example
www.vcpinternet.net is actually located at
the address 209.242.28.135. As you might imagine,
it is much easier to
remember vcpinternet.net than 209.242.28.135
if you wanted to return to this web site. All
Internet domain names are registered in a centralized
database at www.internic.org for specific periods
of time. Domain names must be registered through
authorized registrars.
- Red Hat w/ Apache Web Server -- A Linux-based web site server
based on the Red Hat Linux operating system
using Apache Web Server software. Integrated
Perl and PHP scripting are among the features
available on this type of server.
- Windows 2000 Server w/ IIS 5.0 -- A Microsoft® Windows-based
web site server using Internet Information
Server 5.0. This server offers such features and Active
Server Pages(ASP), Active Server Pages(ASP.Net)
and an Indexing Server.
- E-Mail Addresses -- Allows clients to receive e-mail for their virtual web site in the form of 'client_name@client_web_site.com'.
- E-Mail Forwarding -- Allows incoming e-mail to a specific
account on a web site to be redirected to a
different email account anywhere on the Internet.
This allows clients with an existing e-mail
account to receive their web
site's e-mail on that account.
- Web Space -- The amount of hard drive space allowed for the text, image, and other files for a client's web site.
- Unlimited Data Transfer -- No limit to the amount of traffic
entering and leaving a web site. This does
not include any form of multimedia streaming
content.
- Front Page Extensions -- Server side processes that integrate
with web pages created in MS Front Page to
enhance the features of a client's web site.
- Front Page 2000 Extensions -- Front Page Extensions for the Windows 2000 Server.
- FTP Access -- Allows customers to update and maintain their
web sites without interaction with our company
provided that they understand the standard
processes of web site development and updating
web site content using an FTP capable program.
- PHP Scripting -- A Hypertext Preprocessor similar to VBScript and ASP pages. This is a Linux-based scripting language that is executed on the server when a page request is made, allowing dynamic content.
- Server Side Includes -- Also known as SSI, allows external
static content to be embedded within a web
page. This processing is done on the server
prior to the end user sees the page.
- CGI/Perl -- Common Gateway Interface (or 'CGI') allows programs
to interact with web requests. This is currently
only offered via the Perl language on our servers.
- Active State Perl -- Perl is a language native to Linux/Unix
operating systems. However Active State Perl
is a Perl interpreter for the Windows 2000
Server that allows CGI/Perl scripts to be
executed. Note: This feature is not as robust
as the CGI/Perl feature mentioned above. Web
sites requiring Perl as the exclusive
server-side scripting language run more
efficiently on a Linux web server.
- ASP -- Active Server Pages allow for dynamic content to be
generated on the Windows 2000 Server using VBScript or JScript. These
scripts are not compiled and are interpreted at the time of the end
user request.
- ASP.Net -- Active Server Pages for the Microsoft® .Net
Framework. Unlike standard ASP pages, portions
of these pages are compiled prior to page requests
and executed at run time, which results in
faster execution of server-side processing
than in traditional ASP pages. These pages
can be created in a variety of languages varying
from C++.Net to VB.Net.
- Indexing Service -- A simple and manageable service that allows
a search functionality to be incorporated on
a client's web site. Only available on the
Windows 2000 Server.
